Baby Gift Card Card

This was my entry in the Guest Star Stamper over at Papertrey Ink this month. There was a ton of great stuff this month. This set inspired a bunch of great baby gift ideas for people.

I got the idea for this card while I was making my card for the PTI blog hop last month. I was playing with the elephant and some buttons and thought it would be cool to turn him into a pull toy. But then he would have to actually move.

So here is what I came up with. When you pull the little elephant toy he actually reveals a hidden panel that reveals a gift card. I had seen a ton of motion cards using a couple of dimensional dots and pennies that allows a part of a card to move freely on the card base. This one had to be a bit different because the elephant toy had to attach to the hidden panel in order to move it.

Warning: This is my first attempt at explaining anything this in depth so if forgot anything please let me know. OK, Here we go!

I cut a piece of patterned paper to 5 1/2 x 9. Scored (on my Scor-pal) at 4 1/4 and 8 1/2. Folded at the score lines, this will create the pocket for the hidden panel. I waited to glue it together until the end.

I cut the slit on the front panel. I did this by punching a 3/8" hole on each side of the front, making sure they are straight across from each other and then using my craft knife to cut between the two holes. This is the path your slider will take when you pull the toy. (This slot just has to be slightly larger than the 3-D dots you will use later - my dots were 1/4 " so I cut the slot at 3/8). Decorate the front panel how ever you wish. Just make sure to leave clearance for the pull toy to move freely.

The hidden panel is cut to 4 x 5 1/4. You can decorate this anyway you like. I wanted to make sure that the opening on the front was disguised as much as as possible so I strategically placed a strip of the same patterned paper from the front along the panel. I also put a strip of the patterned paper inside the pocket, exactly behind the slot that I cut.

I used my Making Memories slot punch to make the holders for the gift card. (If you are making this card and do not know the size of the gift card you will be using you could add some glue dots (leaving the paper on top of the dot) to hold the card in place.) I lightly traced the gift card and punched the crescent shape just outside of the marks.

The elephant (or whatever you want for a toy) was stamped and cut out. I also pieced on another ear to give him some 3-Dness. A little piece of hemp cording was stuck through the elephant for a pull cord. Buttons were added with glue dots.

Now to put this bugger together.

I lined up the hidden panel inside of the pocket. Make sure it is centered inside the pocket or it will fetch up when it slides out. I paper clipped this entire sandwich together to hold it while I added the elephant. I added 2 layers of 3-D dots in the far right of the slot and another 2 layer stack about a 1/4" to the left. This is where the elephant will be when the card is closed. Now all that is left to do is stick the elephant onto the dot stacks and pull. It might take a little tweaking to get the panel to pull out smoothly.

The elephant is from the Papertrey Ink Bitty Baby Blessing set. Any of the adorable animals or toys in that set would work as a pull toy for this card. All of the paper and ribbon is from Papertrey Ink. The buttons are from the button bar at CKC. (Actually the buttons say Tommy Hilfiger on them... pretty stylish wheels, ah?)

So if you still reading and you have any questions please drop me a comment with your e-mail and I will do my best to answer.
ETA: See I knew I would forget something.
I mounted everything I explained above onto a card base made out of Stampers Select. There just was not enough room for a personal message on the hidden panel.
